The Importance of Integrity

Think of someone you really admire. What characteristics does that person exhibit? Chances are good that integrity is at the top of your list. The dictionary defines integrity as an “adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.” That is similar to the way the Hebrew and Greek languages of the Bible define it. No doubt, integrity matters to God and it should matter to you and me. Would people characterize you as a person of integrity?

In Acts 5, we see how important integrity and authenticity was in the early church. It was important for lots of reasons, not the least of which, it helped distinguish the early believers from the religious leaders in Jerusalem at that time who were often very hypocritical and inauthentic. It also helped the believers in the early church to enjoy favor in the community and enabled them to be more effective witnesses for Christ.

What happened when a married couple behaved in a way that was hypocritical and inauthentic? What does that, along with the actions of the Apostles, teach us about the importance of integrity? What does the Bible teach us about how to live with integrity?
