Are the 10 Commandments Still Relevant?

One of the most sickening feelings you can get in life is the feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you see the blue lights of a police car in your rear window - not that I have ever seen that; I’m just saying. If you drive long enough, you may have the misfortune of seeing those lights for making a “driving error”. Is that what they call “speeding” now? I’m sure it is humiliating to sit on the side of the road for what seems like an eternity while the law enforcement officer writes a ticket. Again, not that I have ever experienced such a thing,… I’m just saying.

Why do laws matter? Any civilized society needs law and order to function and prosper. When the Israelites were on their way to he promised land, God shared some foundational laws to govern relationships with Him and others. We know those laws as The Ten Commandments. After laying down the law, God expanded on those laws, adding detail and instruction for His followers.

Christ-Followers are governed by the Spirit, not just the law… 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Galatians 5:18. So why do these Mosaic laws matter to Believers? They matter a lot! Jason Meyer has written a book called The End of the Law: Mosaic Covenant in Pauline Theology. In that book, he offers a number of reasons why the law matters to Christ-Followers. I shared these on Sunday at the conclusion of our sermon.

  • The Mosaic Law reveals God’s holiness and our pursuit of it. 1 Peter 1:16.

  • The Mosaic Law defines sin and exposes its heinous nature. Romans 3:20

  • The Mosaic Law confirms our need to be separate from sin. John 15:19

  • The Mosaic Law expounds on God’s two most basic commands. Matthew 22:37-38

  • The Mosaic Law establishes the principle of sowing and reaping. Deuteronomy 11:26-28; Galatians 6:7

  • The Mosaic Law shows the need of a substitutionary sacrifice. Hebrews 9:22

  • The Mosaic Law provides many pictures of Christ and His redemption. Hebrews 7:27; Galatians 3:24; Romans 10:4
