Are you "kind"?

Are you "kind"? I think most of us would like to describe ourselves as "kind"; at least we want to believe we are, right? Kindness is actually a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22) and it is an essential ingredient of love, according to 1 Corinthians 13:4. This past Sunday, we learned what biblical kindness looks like... it is bountiful, courteous, benevolent and obliging, tender, big hearted. For Believers, kindness is a reflection of our commitment to love like Jesus, not just with words, but with action. 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18 The idea of benevolence is wound up in kindness... that means "looking out for the wel

Live Love

Love is definitely in the air this week... I heard on the news, as I shared Sunday, that 54% of women will break up with their sweetheart if they do not get a gift on Valentine's Day. I remember when Lori and I were dating in high school spending a lot of money for a 17-year old kid on a dozen roses. I had them delivered to school hoping that she would get them during class; unfortunately, lots of other guys had the same idea, so all the roses were delivered to the school library to be picked up after school, and to wilt... It looked like a floral store in there that afternoon. I remember thinking, "not sure this was really worth $30." But, at least Lori didn't break up with me! Actua

"Win" in life

I wonder how many people actually did that and missed the most spectacular comeback - or implosion - in Super Bowl history! It was a monster win for the Patriots and heartbreaking loss for the Falcons. This past Sunday as we concluded our Great Expectations series, we learned what the bible teaches us about how to "win" in life! We learned that we win with wisdom... we win when we limit foolish decisions and choices. We discovered that God generously gives us wisdom (James 1:5); and we all need it! In Proverbs 4, a loving father tells his sons how

Be great - serve!

We have heard a lot about being "great" lately haven't we? I think we all like the idea of greatness; who wouldn't? We want to be great spouses, parents, students, employees, children don't we? So what did Jesus say about how to be "great"? Jesus said: 26 ...whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, Matthew 20:26. We think about greatness in lots of ways... vocational success, athletic achievement, intellectual prowess... but when Jesus talked about being "great", he spoke about humble service - a heart to serve. That was totally contrary to first century Roman culture and it is contrary to our self-centered culture. Jesus is saying if you want to be great, then
