Communication is Key to Healthy Relationships

Vibrant communication is a key element in all healthy relationships. It is true in our relationships with God and it is absolutely true with our family members. Jesus modeled the importance of communicating with our heavenly Father daily. 35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Mark 1:35.

Jesus was very intentional about starting His day, in solitude, with the Lord. How much better would our days be if and when we take the time to start our day communicating with God? In last week’s sermon, I spent some time unpacking what the Bible teaches us about the benefits of praying early and often. The Apostle Paul challenges us to: 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Are you praying early and often, throughout your day?

Communication is a vital element in building strong, healthy, happy families too. On Sunday, we outlined some biblical “rules” for good, healthy communication:

  • Rule #1 – Pause… take a moment to talk. 1 Thessalonians 2:8, 11

  • Rule # 2 – Listen…pay attention. James 1:19

  • Rule # 3 – Clarify… go deeper. Psalm 102:1-2

  • Rule #4 – Empathize… seek to understand. Psalm 139:1-4

  • Rule #5 – Off-Limits… avoid criticism. Ephesians 5:29

Are you practicing these rules in your home? For much more on strengthening your relationships through communication, listen to the sermon online. Share it with a friend too.
