Devotion: Have I made peace with God?
To say these are uncertain times sounds like understatement. Most of us haven't experienced anything like what we is happening around us in our lifetimes. No doubt many are feeling unsettled, frightened and troubled. When we go through difficult and trying seasons in life, it is common, and fair, to ask faith questions like “why is this happening”, “what is God doing”, “does God have a plan and a purpose with this?”
No doubt, God has a plan and a purpose! God can, and will, use everything that happens in this world to accomplish His will and His purpose. (Romans 8:28). The great news is that we can have peace in life, even when we don’t fully understand! That peace comes not in the peace offered by the world, but in the peace offered by Jesus Christ! 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27
What is the difference between the world’s peace and the peace Jesus offers? How can I experience His peace in my life? Throughout this week, we will be answering this questions with daily posts, including “Truths to Ponder”, to encourage you and to help you consider and apply these truths in your life.
What is peace? In the New Testament, the primary Greek word for “peace” is eirene, and it refers to rest and tranquility. Could you use some rest and tranquility in your life these days!?
The truth is that Jesus came to offer peace on earth!
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14
This peace is not given to all, but rather to all who are justified or who accept Jesus as Savior, freeing them from the penalty of sin. So if you want to experience the peace Jesus offers, start by making peace with God by inviting Jesus to save you from your sins. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Romans 5:1
God wants you to be at peace with Him! Our sin causes us to not be at peace with Him. In fact, our sin creates conflict with Him because He is holy and righteous. Our sin makes us not holy and not righteous. Once you make this critical life decision to put your faith in Christ, you are justified, or declared righteous, which leads to peace with God! Then the Holy Spirit begins to go to work in you, producing fruits of the spirit, including the fruit of peace!
That doesn’t mean that life will be perfect - this world is far from perfect. But you can experience the peace Christ offers even when you face troubling and fearful seasons in life. For far more, click here to listen to Finding Peace When I Don’t Understand.
I also want you to know that I trust God completely and firmly believe He is in control. Join me in that firm faith! We will see opportunities in the days and weeks ahead to serve others.
